Ideas for a naming or guardian ceremony
I would give a gift that is symbolic of your intent as guardian. I would imbue it with the proper symbolic meanings, runes, colors, images that fit what your intent is. I would write a poem or a letter that the child can keep until his initiation ceremony when this can be repeated with different totems of intent and love. Remember, as pagan men we must honor what we promise. Our image as pagan men is affected by what we do. When you make a promise, be aware that if you fail, it will affect other pagan couples decisions to have this ceremony. This is an honor, and one we should not take lightly. I speak not to the sender of the inquiry, but to pagan men as a general whole. (myself included.) While we have only known the couple we gave the gift to, we meant it as a promise to watch and give when needed.

If you're looking at becoming a (spiritual) guardian of a child, acknowledge the child and let them know what it is you intend to do and be for them. At four years old, they should have some understanding of what it is that you're offering. If you and the child's parent/s are happy with you doing so, you could call upon the god/ess forms (or other) that are significant to you and ask their blessing on the child and introduce them to each other - this can help create a spiritual bond with the child that would assist you both as they grow and help develop the trust between you......
My two bits worth...hope you can find something in it.
